| In preparation for the kickoff of the Mesilla Valley Onion Festival, Doña Ana Community College Culinary Arts students, under the tutelage of Assistant Professor Gemma Nicholson, were graciously permitted to host their culinary demonstrations for the Sonoma Ranch Elementary School 2nd graders, their teachers, and Principal Mrs. Hammond. The culinary arts students prepared and served the 2nd graders samples of onion-based ice cream and cookies. Some of the 2nd graders were not quite sure what to make of the onion-based treats; but they bravely tasted ice cream and cookies, and most were surprised--giving the treats a thumbs-up!All 2nd grade students from Sonoma Ranch Elementary School have entered the Onion Royalty Contest and will be composing an Onion Poem. Winners of this contest will be crowned Prince and Princess at the Mesilla Valley Onion Festival--a signature event--to be held in Mesilla on April 24 and 25, 2010, in the Mercado area behind the Preston Art Gallery. Opening ceremonies will include Miss New Mexico and Miss Teen New Mexico ribbon cutting. Bring the whole family to the Mesilla Valley Onion Festival and enjoy a fun-filled weekend of live entertainment, food and art vendors, cooking demonstrations by amateurs and professionals, an art auction, and much, much more! |
